Pre-purchase Evaluations

Problem Horse Evaluations

We don't "pass or "fail" horses during pre-purchase evaluation. Rather, we try to accurately identify each abnormality and make the buyer aware of how such abnormalities may affect the performance of the animal for its intended use.

Some people want a horse only to observe as it meanders across the pasture; others are hoping to compete in the next Olympic Games. The client’s expectations for the horse weigh heavily during a pre-purchase examination.

Horse Evaluations

Pre-purchase
Horses are dynamic. They are living creatures that change with time and use. However, the pre-purchase evaluation is designed to assess a specific animal at only one point in time. A veterinarian can also help the buyer evaluate a horse before a purchase commitment is made. Of course, owners have many reasons to buy a horse, and it is very important for the buyer to know exactly what they will expect of the animal, so we can guide you in the most suitable direction.

Problems
Any behavior that is undesirable to the owner could be considered a problem. Our trained staff considers the problem at hand and determines the best course of action to alter the behavioral issue.

Handler
Our staff is trained to determine if the horse issues are a handler issue or a horse issue. We can advise you in the best direction for the discipline you're wishing to pursue.

Environmental
Is the behavior environmental?  Our staff can do a walk through of your facility to determine if the behavior issues stem from the surroundings.  Keep in mind this could be simple (two incompatible horses next to each other for example) or very complex.

Methods
Each person has their own training techniques. However many horse people are unaware of the innate equine behavior.  Some techniques may be better suited for some horses.  We can give our opinion on other options.

Relationship
We can determine whether the horse and owner have compatibility issues or is it something different.  Does the horse feel comfortible with its particular discipline?
