The "Through the Horses' Eyes© program is a learner-centered experiential educational process whereby horses "teach" participants about themselves and their patterns of interaction with others and the larger social system.  Through demonstrations and interactive activities using horses, this model helps individuals to better understand themselves and others. It helps them not only realize the reciprocal nature of interpersonal dynamics but also encourages people to understand their own responsibilities and control within those dynamics and how to improve their own interpersonal effectiveness and relationship skills.

Next, participants are taught a variety of life skills such as respect, personal boundaries, effective communication, trust, relationship building, goal setting, teamwork, leadership, assertiveness, self-confidence, and many others. This is accomplished through demonstrations of how the handler can manipulate the interaction between him/herself and the horse simply by attending to the horse's reactions, understanding the messages being relayed and changing his/her own method of communication or interpersonal behavior to elicit a more desirable response from the horse. 

By expanding on this basic concept and utilizing the horse's responses and feedback to the participants, the horses are providing guidance and evaluation of the behavior/skill being practiced:  this allows individuals to realize their own roles and level of responsibility in creating and or maintaining the relationships they are involved in (whether these are effective or dysfunctional).
